Barry DeCarli's Poetry Books
Camouflage of Noise and Silence (published in 2020)
• Barry DeCarli is a metaphysical poet. He searches human behavior and human history for signs of the grand design, the lofty philosophies of life. He uses his own memories, hopes, and regrets and makes out of them metaphors for each one of us as we struggle through the events of our days, whether little triumphs or small disasters. Everywhere he looks he sees the dichotomies of noise and silence overwhelming the truths of daily living and how we camouflage ourselves, in myriad ways, to avoid hurt and disappointment. It’s been too long in our literary culture since poetry of this design has appeared. We should greet Barry DeCarli’s new book, Camouflage of Noise and Silence, not with utter silence but with joyful noise. -- Gary Metras, Easthampton, MA Poet Laureate 2018-2019 • In his third collection, Camouflage of Noise and Silence, Barry DeCarli visits the past, but is firmly rooted in the now. In a world where meaningful communication is elusive because of “so many pins dropping,” his poems urge intimacy and attention. With curiosity and compassion, humor and irony, DeCarli wrestles with the weight of memory and the emptiness of an unexamined life. His voice reminds us that “the scars won’t take us back,” that we must find emotional common ground. -- Gail Thomas, author of Waving Back and Odd Mercy Available here for $17 + postage. |
Almost
Introduction: So much happens in our lives. and yet, the things that stand out much of the time are those that almost happened. Almost, but not quite. Often it's a feeling that brings us to tears, a feeling that senses the nearness of a miracle. Almost finding love, almost losing love. It's an optimistic feeling, almost. As children (and as adults), it might have been a snowstorm's snow changing to rain, giving us only a glimpse of what might have been. More often, almost is the thread of life that holds us together and encourages us to keep dreaming. It's that spirit in us that won't let us give up. It's the closeness of reaching a goal or a dream coming true that keeps us going. Almost...maybe tomorrow. DeCarli Book Sings By Don Avery Barry DeCarli has seen love and hate and hurt; and has known hope and seen dreams shattered; has felt life pulse and not missed a drop; has known frustration and not been cowered. That much is clear. In a thin volume of verse entitled “Of Sun and Rain,” DeCarli has, in imagery so poignant at times that we see the man’s inside, see the universe inside himself. And he has had the grasp of ego necessary to paint pictures of that universe in colors the reader can comprehend. Perhaps, there is no better definition of a poet than that. His free-flowing verse, metered to an unheard beat, captures the essence of his own song of joy. Without affectation, so often in modern avant garde poetry, DeCarli has as easily captured the pathos of a soldier dead without cause as the majesty of a snowflake falling joyously to earth. For Barry DeCarli is that uncommon thing - a poet. For who could argue that: “...the earth’s air / not again to be taken in breath / was close to the last thing / that we put to death.” Or, simple words transformed into shouts of imagery: "...or you stumble / like a laugh / never tried…” Or truth so blatant that we wonder how we miss it: “it seems that man has learned / not to see / not to know / for he’s found the pot / of gold / but lost the rainbow…” “Of Sun and Rain” is far-ranging in subject matter and the author appears, at times, deeper than his years. But few will read this volume without saying “This is a poet.” I recommend it. Of Sun and Rain, Published by Vantage Press, ©1972, 64 pages. Only 400 were printed.
